Riverfest 2019

 

 

 

 

 

Riverfest is our premier, annual community event for ‘Our Living River’, celebrating the Parramatta River and surrounding catchment. This year’s Riverfest will take place between Thursday, 17 October and Sunday, 27 October.

 

Riverfest 2019 launch – Saturday, 19 October

Join us for the launch of Riverfest 2019 on Saturday, 19 October at the Masters Swimming NSW (MSNSW) open water swim at Lake Parramatta! City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Bob Dwyer will start the 2km race and PRCG Chair Cr Mark Drury will blow the whistle for the 1km course. While you’re there, take the time to explore the scenic trails around the lake foreshore or relax with a leisurely picnic.

Eastern Long Necked TurtleIf you love photography and wildlife why not combine the two with the Inner West Council’s nature photography competition? Just tag and share native plant and animal photos on Instagram with the hashtags #innerwestwildlife and #iwccomp. Everyone can take part but only Inner West residents are eligible for prizes. Lake Parramatta Open Water Swim

Following the successful inaugural open water swim at Lake Parramatta last year, MSNSW is once again hosting a trial open water swim at this picturesque swim site. There is a 1km and 2km course and entries are limited to 50 competitors. Find out more or register here.

Granny Smith Festival
City of Ryde

The annual Granny Smith Festival celebrates the life and legacy of one of our district’s most famous citizens, Maria Ann Smith (aka Granny Smith) who, back in 1868, ‘accidentally’ grew the first batch of little green apples that bear her name and are now grown all over the world. Bag Making Bee with Boomerang Bags
City of Canada Bay and Boomerang Bags

City of Canada Bay and Boomerang Bags are working together to reduce the reliance on single-use plastic by making reusable shopping bags. Made from donated materials, Boomerang Bags is a means of providing a sustainable alternative to plastic bags. Find out more or register here.

 

 

Resilient Blacktown Picnic Day
Blacktown City Council

Bring the family along for a fun, free day out to meet and learn more about some of the amazing people who keep our streets and local environment safe and clean for everyone to enjoy, including: the State Emergency Services, Blacktown Police, Red Cross, SydWest Multicultural Services, Parramatta River Catchement Group, and Stormwater Shepherds. Clean Up Badu Mangroves
Sydney Olympic Park

The Badu Mangrove contains the largest stands of Mangrove Forest and Coastal Saltmarsh along the Parramatta River estuary. A large amount of litter accumulates in this area during hide tide and after heavy rainfall events. Come along and help the park rangers clean up this important part of the Parramatta River foreshore while learning more about the value of these ecological communities. Clean Up Haslam’s Creek Flats

Come along and do your bit to help clean Haslam Creek – a coastal saltmarsh that is listed as an endangered ecological community in NSW. This event is a collaboration between War on Waste – Newington and Wentworth Point and Sydney Olympic Park Authority. Meadowbank Wharf Clean Up
City of Ryde

If you’re a Meadowbank local or live nearby, come along and help clean up the foreshore of this scenic location on the river. This is the first event of a regular clean-up being planned. Aussie Backyard Bird Count

The #AussieBirdCount is a great way to connect with the birds in your backyard no matter where your backyard happens to be — a suburban backyard, a local park, a patch of forest, down by the beach, or the main street of town. You can count as many times as you like over the week, we just ask that each count is completed over a 20-minute period. The data collected assists BirdLife Australia in understanding more about the birds that live where people live. Find out more or register here.

WET workshop

This two-day workshop will focus on easy steps and practical operations of commonly used tools and emerging technologies in knowing water plants, managing habitats for them and monitoring wetlands. The workshop will also highlight lessons learnt from successful management and monitoring by using  practical tools. Top experts in the industry and academia will deliver the talks and tutorials. Paddle on Parramatta River

Join the City of Ryde team for a paddle on the beautiful Parramatta River. The tour will depart from Kissing Point Park where professional guides will take you to Putney Park to explain plans to activate this site for swimming as part of the Parramatta River Masterplan. The group will then paddle back to Kissing Point Park. The tour is suitable for adults who live in the City of Ryde local government area. Kayaks and life jackets are supplied. No experience in kayaking is required however a moderate amount of fitness is required. Find out more or register here.

Night Walk at Darling Mills Creek
The Hills Shire Council/Boronia Tours

Experience the sights and sounds of the bush after dark. An active fox baiting program has seen an increase in the numbers and variety of native animals in the Darling Mills Creek Valley and we may be lucky enough to see some of them on this night time walk. You will be required to bring a torch (torch function on mobile phones is not adequate), water and mosquito repellent and wear warm clothes and closed shoes. Riverfest Clean Up
ParraParents

Join the awesome team of volunteers from ParraParents to help clean up the Parramatta River at Rydalmere Wharf and Eric Primrose Reserve. We will meet at the playground and focus on cleaning up the foreshore from the playground to the wharf. It will be low tide and there are a number of ‘beaches’ full of litter that we can access and clean up as well as clean up rubbish in the park. This event is kid-friendly and we would love to see lots of families join us as we help make Parramatta River swimmable again! Find out more or register here.

 

Bedlam Bay Habitat Planting
Hunter’s Hill Council

Come along and help plant a small bird habitat haven at Bedlam Bay. This area is an important link in a habitat corridor running along the lower Parramatta River. You can help the birds survive by planting protective native plants. Find out more or register here.

 

 

Sustainability Hub Working Bee
Blacktown City Council

The Sustainability Hub in Seven Hills is a showcase environmental education centre run by Blacktown City Council. The site is the base for many of our environmental education programs that aim to inspire the residents of Blacktown City to be environmentally aware and live more sustainably. We hold regular working bees at the Sustainability Hub where volunteers can help with a range of tasks to help maintain the garden and demonstration areas. Jobs vary each month and could include helping with planting and watering, weeding and mulching, compost-turning, and general site maintenance. Find out more or register here.

 

Kayaking Bushcare Volunteer Workday at Lake Parramatta
City of Parramatta

Join us for a day of conservation kayaking at Lake Parramatta. Activities on the day will include weed control (Coral Trees, Senna & Taro (Elephant Ears) and rubbish removal. BYO lunch for a post-paddling picnic. Participants who haven’t kayaked before are welcome, as you will be given tips and guidance on the day. However, you will need to be reasonably fit and agile to climb in and out of the kayak onto the bank of the lake. The event is suitable for adults and children over 15 years.
