Reducing pollution before it reaches our waterways

SHARE

The PRCG is working with councils, communities, and industry to reduce litter and improve stormwater management across the catchment.

This year, the PRCG completed its Litter Prevention Roadmap, which identifies priority litter items and hotspots and outlines actions to help reduce the amount of rubbish entering our waterways.

The PRCG is also partnering with member councils on a Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) project to improve the management of stormwater treatment features such as raingardens, rainwater tanks, and permeable paving. These systems help improve water quality, reduce flooding, and create healthier, more liveable neighbourhoods.

The Get the Site Right program, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, continues to tackle sediment pollution from construction sites through education and compliance activities, helping prevent soil, litter, and other pollutants from washing into local creeks and rivers.

How you can help protect our waterways

If you’re building, renovating, or landscaping:

  • Retain as much vegetation as possible on the site and street verge during construction
  • Keep soil, sand, and building materials contained on-site
  • Maintain sediment fences and other erosion controls
  • Wash tools and equipment away from stormwater drains
  • Sweep up waste instead of hosing it into the street or drains.

Around your home:

  • Keep leaves, grass clippings and garden waste out of gutters
  • Wash cars on the lawn or at a commercial car wash
  • Pick up and dispose of pet waste properly
  • Reduce single-use plastics and recycle correctly
  • Avoid overfilling bins and cover skips to prevent waste escaping
  • Dispose of household chemicals at a Community Recycling Centre or Chemical CleanOut event
  • Regularly check rainwater tanks, on-site detention systems, gutters and stormwater drains to ensure they are clear and functioning properly.

While you’re out and about:

  • Put litter in the bin and pick up rubbish when you see it
  • Dispose of cigarette butts and vapes responsibly
  • Take reusable bags, bottles, and coffee cups when possible
  • Report illegal dumping or pollution to your local council.
